Overview

The primary challenge was to visually and tangibly exhibit the mildness of the toothpaste while highlighting its benefits for oral health. They needed to create a compelling demonstration that could effectively convey the mildness aspect to internal stakeholders.

Seeking to internally showcase this breakthrough, the team engaged with USP, a trusted partner in previous collaborations, to create a successful demonstration for their new formulation.

Using ideation to conceptualize a demonstration strategy and comprehensive brainstorming sessions and validation, the USP team arrived at a multifaceted solution:

The Challenge

For the Mildness Test, Signal needed to make the "Gentle on gums" promise something shoppers in the oral care category could see for themselves, not just read on a label. In the few seconds a shopper spends at shelf or in a consultation, copy and ingredient lists rarely land, especially when rival products advertise repair, sensitivity & soothing, cleansing & purity claims.

The brief for the Mildness Test was to turn that abstract message into a tangible, repeatable proof point that retail staff, pharmacists or beauty advisors could run on demand, without lab equipment or specialist training, while staying on brand for Signal.

The Approach

Signal Toothpaste’s R&D successfully formulated a new toothpaste aiming to promote its mildness by excluding Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), positioning it as gentle on teeth and gums while enhancing overall oral health.

USP Demo Solutions built the Mildness Test for Signal around the Mildness Demo method, reducing the Gentle on gums story to a single visible reaction the consumer can trigger themselves. That gives the conversation a clear before/after moment in the oral care aisle instead of a one-way pitch.

From the same physical interaction with the Mildness Test, the demo substantiates claim areas such as repair, sensitivity & soothing, cleansing & purity, so a single asset can carry several conversations across the Signal range.

The Result

The result for Signal is a mild on sensitive teeth, delivered through the Mildness Test as something the consumer experiences first-hand rather than has to take on trust.

By turning Signal's "Gentle on gums" message into a hands-on Mildness Demo moment, the Mildness Test becomes a credible, science-backed conversation starter the shopper can repeat for a friend.

In the field, Signal runs the Mildness Test primarily for retail activation, delivered in diagnostic tool, physical demo so the same Mildness Demo proof point travels from a pharmacist's counter to a beauty advisor's tablet without losing its logic.
